In this book the author looks at female same-sex relationships and transgender identities in Thailand. Over the last 25 years toms and dees have emerged and finally become more visible in Thailand. The term "tom" hereby refers to "tomboy" which is a masculine woman who is sexually involved with a feminine partner and "dee" etymologically derives from "lady" (lay-dee). Sinnot looks at these female same-sex relationships and transgender identities in Thailand by examining the local culture and historical context of female same-sex eroticism and female masculinity in Thailand. She situates Thai tom and dee subculture within the global trend of increasingly hybridized sexual and gender identities.
